Hiking Trail locations around Pearsall TX

McKinney Falls State Park

Austin
Located less than 45 minutes from the bright lights and eclectic music scene of downtown Austin, this hidden retreat will soothe those big-city nerves in a hurry. The park will take you back in time to when Central Texas was the home of Native Americans and the early pioneers were looking for a patch of farmland and dependable water.

Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve

Austin
This is one of Austin's most pristine nature preserves. The trails wind through granite outcrops, woods, and grasslands and near Bee Creek. A small waterfall about halfway through the hike is refreshing. It's home to the black-capped vireo, a threatened species, and hundreds of other bird species. There are many interpretive stations along the trail, making it a great hike for nature lovers.

Inks Lake

Austin
About 20 miles NW of Marble Falls. An easy day hike through the granite hills of Inks Lake State Park. Special Attractions: Granite Hills, spring wildflowers. Permit required for camping.

Cullen Park Hike and Bike Trail

Barker
This is still my favorite trail. It is an excellent place for a beginner to start finding their dirt-legs. In fact, I probably learned to ride a mountain bike here. I mean really learned about tossing the bike into a turn and finding the edge of that envelope good tires can provide. Someday, if I live long enough, I would like to ride this whole thing without ever touching my brakes. That will take control and confidence. And luck. What we have here is about five miles of very tight single-track along the Elm Fork of the Trinity River, a stone's throw from famous Texas Stadium, home of the five-time Superbowl Champions, the Dallas Cowboys. Situated in a forgotten corner of woods between Dallas and Irving, the armpit of the Metromess. This ain't exactly the best part of town—not the worst either, but sort of populated by a lot of non–mountain bikers. People come here to fish or drink beer, and just around the corner is another park (with the same name) known as a meeting spot for people who don't necessarily have the same lifestyle as most folks. If you get my drift. But I still love this place. Dense woods, right on the river in several places, an easy flat trail that is great on a rigid mountain bike or a hybrid. You can bring your kids or pals along who don't have the skills or conditioning to ride the harder trails in the area. I usually don't even carry a patch kit or pump here, because you can easily get back to the trailhead if you have a problem—you're never more than half a mile or so away. As the crow flies, anyway. When you're back there in the woods you'll have no idea where you are.

Cedar Ridge Preserve: Cattail Pond Trail

Duncanville
This moderately challenging hike to one of the area's tallest peaks feels like it belongs in the Texas Hill Country. It can be surprisingly secluded given its central location in the Dallas– Fort Worth Metroplex. Unlike other area trails, which have little change in elevation, this one moves up and down like a roller coaster, offering thrilling views of Joe Pool Lake to the west and a calming moment or two by a cattail pond before winding back up to the trailhead.

Summit Trail

Fredericksburg
A hike to the summit of Enchanted Rock has been a rite of passage for every teenage Texan since its acquisition in the 1980s. One of the largest batholiths in the country, it has been designated a National Natural Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its celebrity, much like Ayres Rock in Australia, is in its striking appearance as well as in its mystical draw.

Rowlett Creek Nature Preserve Trails

Garland
Oh man, this place is sweet. It's a series of single-track loops right in the middle of a major Metromess suburb. It has something to offer riders of all skill and endurance levels. There's enough easy stuff to ride that you never have to venture over into the technical trails. It also has enough technical trails that you never have to go over to the easy stuff if you don't want to.

Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge

Muleshoe
The oldest national wildlife refuge in Texas, Muleshoe was established as a wintering area for migratory waterfowl and Sandhill Crane. The refuge includes 5,809 acres of prairie and sink-type lakes with no outlets. Refuge roads are open from dawn to dusk, but the refuge headquarters (2.25 miles west of SH 214) is open Monday through Friday from 8 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. Key birds: Lesser Prairie-Chicken, Scaled Quail, Greater Roadrunner, Cactus Wren, Curve-billed Thrasher and much more!

Lost Mine Trail

Panther Junction
The Lost Mine Trail is one of the most popular in the park. Most hikers in good shape can do the round trip in 3 to 4 hours. For those without the time to hike to the South Rim, this trail is an excellent substitute. People with even less time or energy may elect to hike only the relatively easy first mile of the trail; on clear days this provides beautiful views of Juniper Canyon and south into Mexico.
